Graduated from Department of Economics at Fudan University in 1955, Zhu is Professor, honorary director, and Ph.D. supervisor of the Institute for Population and Development Studies at Xi'an Jiaotong University. Zhu is a distinguished scholar and social activist in the field of China’s population development, women’s development and gender equality, a well-known social scientist in Shaanxi province as well. Together with the team of the Institute for Population and Development Studies, Zhu established China's first experimental zone, which aims to improve living environment of girls and promote the generation of a national policy action called "Caring for Girls Campaign". Zhu won China Population Award for her distinguished work of girl’s living environment improvement and gender equality promotion.
Zhu has obtained one first-class prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and two first-class prizes offered by National Family Planning Commission of China and China Population Association. Zhu has also been awarded two second-class prizes of Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards, and one first-class prize of Shaanxi Provincial Philosophy and Social Science Award.
