Previous research associates children’s
left behind status with psychological problems.
The present study uses data on nearly 4,000 middle school students from
Hanzhong and Ye Xian collected by Jiaotong University researchers. In contrast
to prior findings, this study finds no effect of left-behind status on symptoms
of depression. Other variables related to separation from parents and parental
relations appear to be more important. A narrow focus on the experience of
left-behind children could miss important aspects of children’s psychic
welfare. These findings are preliminary.
