Founded in October 2012, Center for Population and Social Policy Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong University is the Key Research Base of Humanities and Social Sciences of Xi’an Jiaotong University. With Professor LI Shuzhuo as director and Professor LI Jie as executive deputy director, the center has 16 full-time teachers (10 professors, 4 associate professors, and 2 lectures). With the goal of becoming key national think tanks of population and social development, the center is focused on important emerging issues of population and social development, conducting academic research internationally, and promoting public policy innovation through policy analysis and community practice. It covers five research fields: gender and development, aging and health, population policy and development, migration and urbanization, ecology and land resource management.
In May 2014, Xi’an Jiaotong University and Stanford University signed Memorandum of Understanding, which would collaboratively develop Center for Population and Social Policy Studies to be a high level think tank. Specifically, based on Institute of Population and Development Studies at Xi’an Jiaotong University and Morrison Institute for Population and Resource Studies at Stanford University, the memorandum set up a new framework for education and scientific collaboration among relevant schools and institutes at the two universities in order to promote international collaboration on important research issues relevant to China in the field of population and social policy studies.
