讲座嘉宾简介：
Richard
Shearmur is the editor-in-chief of Urban Geography
(http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/rurb20/current). His research interests mostly
focus on cities and firm-level innovation, innovative municipalities, urban and
regional development, measurement, data and knowledge and real estate and so
on. He has published over 150 papers in
journals/book chapters and participated in numerous research projects.
After
getting bachelor degree in Cambridge University and MUP degree in McGill, he
gained his doctor degree in de Montréal University. From November 1998 to July
2013, he worked in Institut national de la recherche scientifique· Urbanisation
Culture Société Research Centre and now he joins McGill urban planning school
as professor from August 2013.
讲座题目1：Factors of regional growth.

讲座内容简介：Using
statistical analyses based on Canadian and French data, this lecture will
discuss which factors are connected to urban and regional growth. These factors
will be broadly divided into two: geo-structural factors (linked to location,
accessibility and size) and local factors (linked to population, human capital
and industrial structure). The methods, techniques and data used to perform the
analyses will be described. The importance of solid theorization, reliable data
and clear concepts will be discussed. Specific themes such as human capital and
accessibility will be discussed in more detail, and the question of whether
models work across all regions, across different scales and across different
countries will also be raised.

learn from Canada

讲座内容简介：Innovation is
often presented as a key factor of regional growth. However, results from
Canada show that innovation occurs in many different types of regions, yet some
types of region decline and others grow. In this paper a new way of theorizing
the innovation process will be discussed. This way of theorizing the innovation
process reconciles the apparent paradox that innovation occurs in places where
there is little or no economic growth.

讲座内容简介：Canada is a vast
country, and economic activity is spread unevenly across its urban centres.
This lecture will first present the concept
of an urban system. It will then describe the economic geography of
Canada, presenting maps, data and tables showing how different towns specialize
in different economic functions. The central argument is that Canadian cities
are not really competing between each other, rather they each are playing a
role in a wider system. Regularities will be pointed out, and some factors of
change will also be discussed.

will describe, in broad terms, the way that journals work. Each journal is
different, and this is a key thing that potential authors must understand. He
will discuss what to look for when deciding where to publish, and will then
describe in more detail the way that Urban Geography 9the journal that he is
editor-in-chief of functions internally. He will also discuss the review
process, what types of reviews are typically received, and how authors should
deal with reviews.
